F is for the Fasciitis Fighter

The Fasciitis Fighter is a commercially made device designed to help with loading and strengthening exercises for heel pain or plantar fasciitis. The device is based on the technique of performing calf muscle raises with a towel that is rolled up under the toes. As rolling up a towel can be inconvenient to do when you want to do these exercises, the Fasciitis Fighter was created by a physiotherapist to make it easier to do these exercises.

Stretching and strengthening exercises are vital for the management of plantar fasciitis.

Stretching exercises are crucial for easing the tension in the plantar fascia, Achilles tendon, and calf muscles. One of the most effective stretches is the towel stretch: sit down with your legs extended, loop a towel around the ball of your foot, and gently pull back while keeping your knee straight. Hold for 15–30 seconds and repeat 2–3 times per foot. Another solid one is the calf stretch on a wall—stand facing a wall with your hands braced, one leg behind you with the heel flat and the knee straight, then lean forward. This targets the calf and indirectly helps the plantar fascia relax. These stretches are best done first thing in the morning and after prolonged sitting, when pain is usually worse.

Strengthening exercises focus on building support around the arch and heel. Try the towel scrunch exercise: place a towel flat under your foot and use your toes to scrunch it toward you—great for activating the intrinsic foot muscles. Another favorite is the marble pick-up—simply pick up small objects like marbles or pebbles using your toes and drop them into a cup. To build arch strength and support, consider short foot exercises (also called doming), where you try to raise the arch of your foot without curling the toes. These moves are subtle but incredibly effective when done consistently. Start slow and gradually increase reps as your foot adapts.
