Policemans heel is a plantar calcaneal bursitis. It is probably NOT as most sources claim is a plantar fasciitis.
In the past the police officer used to spend a lot of time on their feet walking the beat. This obviously is going to lead to a number of foot problems. Heel pain was common. The early descriptions of what became know as Policeman’s heel sounded very much like a plantar calcaneal bursitis. For some reason most recent articles and online content refer to Policeman’s heel being a plantar fasciitis. The symptoms of the plantar fasciitis are very different to the symptoms that were originally documented as being a Policeman’s heel. Plantar fasciitis and plantar calcaneal bursitis are two very different entities and have a different set of symptoms and a different approach to the treatment.
It is not known why the more recent writings on this consider it a plantar fasciitis.
